چکیده

In recent decades, urbanization has become a significant urban environmental and ecological concern, especially in most developing countries. In China, rapid urban sprawl has had a profound influence on runoff and results in larger and more frequent incidents of flooding in many urban areas. Therefore, evaluating the impacts of urbanization on runoff is of great important for urban planning policy makers and water/land resource management. The objective of this paper is to present a case study to derive land use/land cover (LULC) maps and further to investigate the long-term effects of LULC change on surface runoff in the fast urbanizing Beijing city. The LULC maps were derived from Landsat TM/ETM+ imagery (acquired in 1986, 1992, 1999, 2006, and 2009 respectively) using support vector machine (SVM) method. A Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment (L-THIA) model was applied to assess the impacts of LULC change on surface runoff. Results indicated that the selected study area experienced rapid urbanization from 1986 to 2009. Urban areas increased from 4.18% in 1986 to 12.78% in 2009 in the whole area. Our results also indicated that the long-term surface runoff increased 25% in the whole area from 1986 to 2009, and the runoff increase was highly correlated with urban expansion (R = 0.91). This research can provide a simple method for policy makers to assess potential hydrological impacts of future planning and development activities.

Assessing the Impacts of Urbanization-Associated Land Use/Cover Change on Land Surface Temperature and Surface Moisture: A Case Study in the Midwestern United States

Urbanization-associated land use and land cover (LULC) changes lead to modifications of surface microclimatic and hydrological conditions, including the formation of urban heat islands and changes in surface runoff pattern. The goal of the paper is to investigate the changes of biophysical variables due to urbanization induced LULC changes in Indianapolis, USA, from 2001 to 2006. The biophysica...

Title : The Impacts of Suburban Development on Surface Runoff in Cypress , Texas

Urbanization has been known to alter the hydrologic characteristics of a watershed. This study empirically assesses this notion by investigating the relationship of developed land use/land cover (LULC) changes and surface runoff generation. We examine the Cypress Creek watershed, where its recent development pressure is significantly high due to the rapid growth of Houston, Texas. The watershed...

The effect of Urban Development on Watershed Hydrological Properties (case study: Tajrish Watershed)

The effect of Urban Development on Watershed Hydrological Properties (case study: Tajrish Watershed) Throughout the human history, societies and rivers have been closely linked, so that the human civilization began from the riverside (Stevaux et al. 2009 (. The quantitative and qualitative characteristic of river is vulnerable to land-use changes (Kang et al. 2010). Natural and urban watershed...

Analysis of Settlement Expansion and Urban Growth Modelling Using Geoinformation for Assessing Potential Impacts of Urbanization on Climate in Abuja City, Nigeria

This study analyzed the spatiotemporal pattern of settlement expansion in Abuja, Nigeria, one of West Africa’s fastest developing cities, using geoinformation and ancillary datasets. Three epochs of Land-use Land-cover (LULC) maps for 1986, 2001 and 2014 were derived from Landsat images using support vector machines (SVM). Accuracy assessment (AA) of the LULC maps based on the pixel count resul...

A Landuse Change and Land Degradation Study in Spain and Greece Using Remote Sensing and Gis

The relationship between landuse/landcover (LULC) changes and land degradation in two Mediterranean sites is investigated using remotely sensed and ancillary data. The areas of study, the Xaló river catchment in the north of the Alicante province in southeast Spain and the Aegean island of Lesbos, Greece, have both been subjected to changes in LULC, such as abandonment, overgrazing, forest fire...
